When you start looking for a repair manual online, you should ask yourself if you want to change parts, or solve a problem. The 'parts changer manuals' like Chilton and Haynes are available anywhere for about $20. 'Service Manuals', on the other hand are the ones that will help you solve the problem and give you the instructions on how to change the part.. for almost the same price.
Auto repair manuals like a Chilton or Haynes book are nice to have if you need instructions on how to change something. They are relatively inexpensive online, and in the stores. However, if you are looking for help with finding out what is wrong with your car, and how to fix it the right way, then you should consider a 'factory service manual'. Service manuals give very specific instructions to follow, for any problem that the vehicle can have. One of the reasons it costs so much money to take your car to a shop (to be fixed right, the first time) is the factory service information is not cheap. Then there is the 'knowing how to use' the information. It is fairly self explanatory, and most computer based versions have a search option.
When it comes to getting the information for your car, there are 2 trusted aftermarket sources. Depending on your preferences, each has their strengths and weaknesses. These 2 aftermarket services are used in most shops across the country. They are ALLDATA and Mitchell1. Articles can be written on how to use each one of them, but the process is fairly straightforward for each one. ALLDATA has way more information in it than Mitchell1 has, but Mitchell1 has better wiring diagram system. If you have a wiring problem in the dash or something, then Mitchell1 is the one you need.
There is yet another alternative, yes I saved the best for last. There are technicians out there that are willing to help you, and walk you through diagnosing problems, changing the parts, and getting your car back on the road ASAP. These technicians are willing to help you because they get paid, and it does not have to cost you anything. You can do something like, get a car insurance quote, and then the mechanic will help you, because the site you got the quote from, has paid the mechanic for him sending you there. This is often the best way to go, because you have someone who actually knows how to use the information, and help you solve each individual problem the same way a shop would.
Now that you know your options and how to find the right tool for the job.. even a free option.. Good luck in getting your car fixed!
