Engine Repair Needs

If you think something is wrong with your car, there probably is. This is especially true because, nobody knows how your car 'feels' better than you. Other than that, The best way I know to help you out is to list the most common problems, that would indicate something needs to be serviced, and give you the most common problems right off.
I will explain, in future articles, how to hunt down and solve these problems, in further detail. Just remember, these are only engine problems, and will not cover the entire vehicle. Sometimes what seems like an engine problem is not the engine at all, so be careful.
-Engine problems-
1. Engine backfiring: Usually ignition system related problem, or timing.
2. Engine diesels: This is referred to as 'run-on' after it is shut off.
3. Engine Hard to start when cold. This usually means electrical problems.
4. Engine hard to start when hot. This usually means clogged air filter.
5. Engine hard to start and surges while cold. This means vaccuum leaks, usually.
6. Engine lacks power. This is usually a tuneup issue.
7. Engine lopes while idling, or idles erraticly. This could mean big problems.
8. Engine misfires at idle. Usually, weak ignition or low compression in the engine.
9. Engine misfires throughout driving speed range. Bad need of a tuneup is likely.
10. Engine rotates, but will not start. It is missing fire, fuel, or compression.
11. Oil pressure light on. This means bad sensor, or low oil pressure.
12. Engine stalls. Could be anything, depends when it happens.
13. Engine starts, but stops immediately. Usually fuel system or vaccuum leak related.
14. Engine stumbles on acceleration. Check the TPS or accelerator pump.
15. Engine surges while holding the accelerator steady. Look out for a bad computer.
16. Engine will not rotate when trying to start. Battery, relay, or starter is bad.
17. Oil puddles under engine. Clogged PCV valve or oil leak.
18. Pinging when engine is under load. The cylinders are too hot. Bad gas or EGR.
19. Noisy starter motor engagement. Worn starter bendix or loosely mounted starter.
20. Battery won't hold a charge. Bad battery or charging system problem.
21. Voltage warning light stays on. Usually means alternator or a fusible link.
22. Excessive fuel consumption. Check my arrticles for this one.
23. Fuel leak or odor. Evaporitive emmissions system, or an actual leak. Do NOT drive.
24. Coolant loss. There is a leak, either external or internal. Fix it.
25. Squealing belt. Don't put oil on it. It is either loose or worn.
26. External coolant leak. Change the leaky hose.
27. Internal Coolant Leak. Head gasket/cracked head. Engine will run rough and smoke.
28. Over cooling. Put the thermostat back in it, your robbing yourself at the pump.
29. Overheating. See my articles. I have very good instructions. Change the thermostat anyways.
Thanks for reading.
Hope this helps!
